About UsAn international society for the understanding, prevention and treatment of mental illness related to childbearing. The Marcé society was formed at an International Conference in 1980. The purpose of that conference was to bring together different strands of research in puerperal mental disorders. It was recognised that there needed to be a forum to discuss puerperal mental illness in its broadest sense and a society was formed. The society was named after Louis Victor Marcé, a French psychiatrist who wrote the first treatise entirely devoted to puerperal mental illness, published in 1858.
The principal aim of the society is to promote, facilitate and communicate about research into all aspects of the mental health of women, their infants and partners around the time of childbirth. This involves a broad range of research activities ranging from basic science through to health services research. The Society is multidisciplinary and encourages involvement from all disciplines including: psychiatrists, psychologists, paediatricians, obstetricians, midwives, early childhood nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, community psychiatric nurses, community nurses and health visitors. The society also encourages the involvement of consumer and carer (self-help) groups. The society holds an international meeting every two years (biennal) hosted by the President of the society. These are lively meetings with a high quality scientific content that brings together researchers, clinicians and consumers from around the world. The society was originally established in the UK, but it has grown and is now a truly international society with members from all parts of the world. Regional groups have now been formed (Australasian, Francophone, German) that also hold regular meeting to discuss more regional issues as well as to exchange ideas about all aspects of the mental health of women, their infants and partners. A Biennial General Meeting is held in conjunction with the Biennial International meeting. At this time elections to the committee are held.
